Kirtland AFB demonstrates operational readiness, modernization efforts

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Every day, the security, maintenance, and operational readiness underpinning the nation’s nuclear deterrence enterprise hinge on the discipline and ingenuity of the Airmen stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base. From safeguarding vital national security assets to developing cost-saving maintenance processes on the flightline and inside munitions facilities, Team Kirtland Airmen routinely transform high-stakes operational requirements into everyday mission success.
During an immersion tour Aug. 27–28, 2026, 20th Air Force leadership and their spouses witnessed firsthand how the installation’s mission-ready personnel drive capability forward across the strategic landscape.
“The strength of this installation comes down to its people,” said Maj. Gen. Colin Connor, 20th AF commander. “The work happening here and the investment in its future make it clear that Team Kirtland is committed to excellence and to strengthening the nuclear enterprise every day.”
That operational backbone begins at the perimeter, where the 377th Security Forces Squadron manages continuous security operations supporting more than 20,000 personnel and visitors passing onto the installation daily, alongside specialized defenders securing vital strategic facilities.
At the Kirtland Underground Munitions Maintenance and Storage Complex, Airmen like Staff Sgt. Robert Ecklor, a 377th Weapons Systems Security Squadron defender, stand watch over one of the Department of Defense’s most critical assets, ensuring uncompromised security and continuous deterrence readiness. Connecting these frontline capabilities requires focused leadership and unwavering support across all operational units.
“Kirtland’s missions are diverse, but they all tie back to enabling the nuclear enterprise and supporting our priorities,” said Col. Justin Secrest, 377th Air Base Wing and installation commander.
Beyond physical security, Team Kirtland’s maintainers are actively innovating to make operations safer and more efficient. At the 377th Maintenance Squadron, Airmen demonstrated an organic brass inspection and recycling initiative, where Staff Sgt. Riston Mais showcased the meticulous debris-vetting process for spent brass casings to ensure only clean, serviceable material re-enters the reclamation pipeline. The unit-led initiative has recouped nearly $100,000 in savings and earnings - funds returned directly to the installation to enhance operational readiness and mission support.
“Our maintainers are solving problems that matter,” emphasized Chief Master Sgt. Jeffery Sipos, 20th AF command chief master sergeant. “They’re not just maintaining capability - they’re improving it.”
Senior leaders engaged directly with Airmen, Non-Commissioned Officers, and Company Grade Officers over discussions highlighting installation priorities and walked ongoing dormitory renovation sites. These infrastructure and environmental modernizations directly target living conditions, ensuring Airmen have high-quality, modern quarters that foster personal and professional resilience.
Parallel to dormitory updates, leadership spouses focused on family-centric support structures, including spouse employment panels, medical readiness discussions at the Kirtland Medical Group, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math outreach programs at Starbase New Mexico and Sandia Base Elementary School.
“Readiness is more than the mission itself; it’s also having the right support systems in place,” said Sara Connor, spouse of the 20th Air Force commander, emphasizing how family stability directly reinforces the operational readiness of the warfighter.
Whether inspecting munitions casings, patrolling critical areas, modernizing civil infrastructure, or mentoring the next generation through community STEM partnerships, the Airmen of the 377th Air Base Wing continue to prove that strategic deterrence is built from the ground up. As 20th AF continues modernizing its capabilities, the dedicated professionals across Team Kirtland remain the driving force ensuring the nation’s deterrence posture remains credible, safe, and ready around the clock.
